Fusion research

TOKAMAK

Fusion energy holds the promise of providing safe, sustainable and low-carbon base-load energy that complements other energy sources like solar and wind. The fusion process uses abundant materials like deuterium from seawater and lithium and works by combining hydrogen atoms into helium like in the heart of the Sun. wiki

ECR Plasma

Within the European Co-fund Action Project EUROfusion we investigate and/or develop:

  • Edge Physics of Fusion Plasmas at the medium sized tokamak ASDEX-Upgrade
  • Plasma diagnostics methods based on the injection of fast neutral Li - beams Li - beams
  • Atomic data for fusion

In addition we have construct and built our own ion sources to produce beams of highly charged ions for our collision experiments:

  • ECR ion source: An all-permananet magnet 14.5 GHz Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion sources (SOPHIE) has been built and is used for production of highly charged ion beams.

EUROfusion is the largest consortium of fusion researchers in the world. Together, its 30 member institutes and 150 affiliated universities and companies work to advance the field by executing scientific research and technological development along the European Research Roadmap to the Realisation of Fusion Energy.

Our latest contribution to fusion research: A new solution for the instability problem

QCE regime

For fusion reactors like ITER, plasma instabilities are a major challenge. Now our group at IAP/TU Wien together with IPP Garching) could demonstrate: There is an operational regime for fusion reactors that avoids this problem. Instead of large potentially destructive instabilities, one intentionally accepts many small instabilities that do not pose a problem for the reactor’s walls. The results have now been published in Physical Review Letters and featured in Physics (APS) as well as PhysicsWorld (IOP). Read more.

EUROfusion researchers achieve a new record for sustained energy from fusion

Researchers from the EUROfusion consortium, of our research group is affiliated to, used EUROfusions flagship device the Joint European Torus (JET) to release a record 59 megajoules of sustained fusion energy. The record and the scientific data from these crucial experiments are a major boost for ITER, the larger and more advanced version of JET. Watch the interview Fritz Aumayr gave to Puls 4 TV.

ITER

ITER is the world's largest magnetic confinement fusion experiment currently under construction in the south of France https://www.iter.org/. The project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion as a sustainable energy source, harnessing the power of the sun to produce clean and abundant energy. The ultimate goal is to achieve a net energy gain, where the fusion reactions generate more energy than is required to initiate and sustain the hot plasma. You can witness the progress firsthand by watching the short film produced by Fritz Aumayr during his latest tour of ITER.
