   Energy E0  eV
Target Type  Z2   M2
Scattering angle  ϑ  °
Energy of reflected ion  E1  eV
Max. energy w/ double collision  Ed  eV
  Center-of-mass scattering angle ϑCMS  °

  Impact parameter p  Å
  Closest approach rc  Å
  Differential cross-section dσ/dΩ  Å2/sr

• Please note:
• Due to inelastic processes, actual peak energies in LEIS are lower than the values calculated. The energies calculated roughly correspond to the high-energy “foot” of the peak.
• For non-relativistic particles only.
• Impact parameter and cross section use the “Magic Formula” by Ziegler, Biersack and Littmark. These results may be inaccurate for low values of the scattering angle (ϑCMS < 0.5°). Cross sections at ϑ > 179° might be also less accurate due to numerical errors.

More information on low energy ion scattering (LEIS; also known as ion scattering spectroscopy, ISS) can be found in the following two articles:
• H. Niehus, W. Heiland and E. Taglauer, Low-energy ion scattering at surfaces, Surface Science Reports 17 (1993) pp. 213-303
• H. Niehus and R. Spitzl, Ion-solid interaction at low energies: Principles and application of quantitative ISS, Surface and Interface Analysis 17 (1991) pp. 287-307

Interaction potentials and the “Magic Formula” are based on the legacy TRIM code in J.F. Ziegler, J. P. Biersack and U. Littmark, The Stopping and Range of Ions in Solids, Volume 1, Pergamon Press, New York, 1985.
