Fe3O4 with adsorbed water: Hydrogen seen by STM

The STM image shows an Fe3O4(001) surface after adsorption of water. The image shows the characteristic features of hydrogen on the surface, but no signs of oxygen or OH. The atomic arrangement is superimposed: red oxygen, yellow surface iron becomes brighter (shown orange) in STM if neighboring a hydrogen (white) atom. For details, see Parkinson et al, J. Am. Chem.
