When bringing one of its surfaces in contact with water, researchers around the world have observed a structure that was interpreted as ordering of water molecules or caused by carbon dioxide dissolved in the water. Jan Balajka and colleagues of the IAP surface physics group, together with Melissa Hines (Cornell University) could disprove these ideas. They have used what is probably the purest water drop on Earth, created from an icicle in ultrahigh vacuum (see photo). Surprisingly, the TiO<sub>2</sub> surface structures turned out to come from trace impurities in the atmosphere such as formic acid, present in concentrations of only 1:1000000000! These results were published in the prestigeous journal Science.

The picture shows our first authors: Stefan Gerhold's [[http://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/acs.jpcc.5b06144|paper]] on NiO on SrTiO<sub>3</sub>(110) was accepted in J. Phys. Chem. C, and so was Oscar's [[http://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/acs.jpcc.5b05560|paper]] on formic acid on Fe<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>.  Roland's work on the adsorption and incorporation of transition metals in magnetite was accepted in [[http://journals.aps.org/prb/|Phys. Rev. B]].  Another paper, on imaging TiO<sub>2</sub>(110) in aqueous solution with STM, spearheaded our collaborators in [[https://www.fisica.uniroma2.it/it/node/143|Rome]], was accepted in [[http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1002/(ISSN)2196-7350|Advanced Materials Interfaces]].  Also, the weather has been really hot.
