Research at the IAP
Research at the Institute of Applied Physics (IAP) ranges from purely experimental work in atomic and plasma physics, biophysics, surface physics, laser and ultrasound applications to computational solid-state physics.
Our institute excels at fundamental as well as applied research, often performed in close collaboration with partners in industry. Our scientific results are published in highly prestigious journals (Science, Nature Materials, Physical Review Letters, PNAS, …). Research at the forefront of physics also provides excellent opportunities for students to get hands-on experience on state-of-the-art methods and techniques.
Scientific work is carried out within seven Research Areas (“Forschungsbereiche”):
- Applied Interface Physics (Head Prof. M. Valtiner)
- Atomic and Plasma Physics (Head Prof. F. Aumayr)
- Biophysics (Head Prof. G. Schütz)
- Computational Materials Science (Head Prof. P. Mohn)
- Sensors and Ultrasonics (Head Prof. M. Gröschl)
- Surface & Plasma Technology (Head Prof. W. Werner)
- Surface Physics (Head Prof. U. Diebold)
