The ZnO(0001)-Zn surface

The STM image shows triangular islands and voids. As the structure model shows, due to steps the O/Zn ratio in a triangular island is larger than one, reducing the electrostatic energy of the otherwise positively charged surface. For details, see Dulub et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 016102 (2003).
